After months of speculation from various Dev Kit leaks, Sony have officially revealed the PlayStation 5 controller, and it’s much different that you would have expected.

No longer falling under the ‘DualShock’ brand of PlayStation family controllers, this brand-new controller is known as the DualSense - which has been named to represent the focus on touch and the variety in sensations the controller delivers through its Haptic Feedback features and adaptive triggers.

The DualSense controller has been designed in many ways to keep what fans love about the PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller while evolving it with more immersive features that lets fans “truly feel the tension of your actions”, as well as fixing complaints many had about the DS4.

Most notably, the controller supposedly features a “strong battery life”which could mean the battery inside the DualSense is bigger than that of the DualShock 4’s. The shape of the DualSense has seen a radical overall, designed to accommodate ”a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes” while remaining as light and less bulky as possible with the tech inside.

The TouchPad and Lightbar remain from the DualShock 4, with a much more discreet design to both with the lightbar now running around the edges of the touchpad. The popular ‘Share’ button has now been renamed to the ‘Create’ button, which will offer “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves.”

One big new feature about the controller is that it features a built-in microphone, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. The controller also sports a two-tone colour scheme, a first for any based PlayStation controller.

In a closing message, Jim Ryan President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed that the console is still on track to release Holiday 2020 and that the company plans to reveal more details about the PlayStation 5 including the console design “in the coming months”.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”
